Dr. M. Joe Ma's medical degree was obtained at the Taipei Medical College (now Taipei Medical University) in Taiwan. He received his research training at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities, for which he earned his Ph.D. in Pathobiology with thesis research focused on the effects of oxidative stress to biologic systems. Subsequently he did a short postdoctoral fellowship in Biochemistry at the Scripps Research Institute at La Jolla, CA before completing his residency training in Anatomic Pathology at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in upstate New York. Dr. Ma's subspecialty training in Neuropathology was done at the Massachusetts General Hospital at Boston.
He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology (1995) and Neuropathology (1997). He has taught medical students and residents at the Harvard Medical School (Instructor) and the University of Kansas School of Medicine (Assistant Professor). Before joining the Florida Hospitals in February of 2001, Dr. Ma was in private practice at Wichita, KS and Las Vegas, NV. His clinical service covers all aspects of surgical pathology, cytopathology, neuropathology, and autopsy.
He serves as the consulting neuropathologist for Quest Diagnostics, Inc. in NV and groups in Indiana, Arkansas and New Hampshire. In addition to diagnosing specific neurological and neuromuscular disorders via routine and ultrastructural (electron microscope) examination of biopsies or resected specimens, Dr. Ma is particularly interested in brain autopsy confirmation of neurodegenerative disorders in the elderly and developmental anomalies in children. He has been a strong activist of brain autopsy and offers free advice via the not-for-profit BrainNet Foundation he established in 1999. Dr. Ma had been a Short Course Director (Postmortem Diagnosis of Neurodegenerative Disorders) at the Annual Meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology between 1999 and 2002. He lives at Oviedo, FL with his wife and two children. After work, Dr. Ma likes to surf the internet, travel, teach, and read.
